The Gokyo Lakes Trek is one of the most scenic trekking adventures in Nepal, offering breathtaking mountain views, pristine turquoise lakes, and a unique alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp Trek. Located in the heart of the Everest (Khumbu) region, this remarkable journey takes trekkers through traditional Sherpa villages, high-altitude valleys, and the stunning Gokyo Lake system, one of the highest freshwater lake networks in the world surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks.
The standard Gokyo Lakes Trek itinerary typically lasts between 11 and 14 days, beginning with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River through Phakding and Namche Bazaar before diverging toward the peaceful Gokyo Valley. Along the route, trekkers experience rich Sherpa culture, ancient monasteries, and stunning Himalayan landscapes far from the busier Everest Base Camp trail.
The highlight of the trek is reaching the beautiful Gokyo Lakes, a series of glacial-fed turquoise lakes situated at elevations above 4,700 meters. Trekkers also ascend Gokyo Ri (5,357m), one of the finest viewpoints in Nepal, offering panoramic views of Mount Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), Cho Oyu (8,188m), and numerous surrounding Himalayan peaks.
The Gokyo Lakes Trek difficulty is generally considered moderate to strenuous due to the high altitude and daily walking hours. However, the trek does not require technical climbing skills and is achievable for trekkers with good physical fitness and proper acclimatization. Most itineraries include acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar to help reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
Accommodation is provided in traditional teahouses throughout the trek, while experienced guides and porters can be arranged for added comfort and safety. The trek is especially popular among travelers seeking quieter trails, spectacular mountain scenery, and a more peaceful trekking experience in the Everest region.
The best time for the Gokyo Lakes Trek is during the spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) seasons, when weather conditions are stable, mountain views are at their best, and trekking trails are generally dry and accessible.
Combining stunning alpine lakes, panoramic Himalayan viewpoints, and authentic Sherpa culture, the Gokyo Lakes Trek offers an unforgettable trekking experience and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful treks in Nepal.

“The Everest Base Camp trek was an experience of a lifetime! And a knowledgeable guide like Sam was a definite plus. We learned so much about the Nepali culture. He took extra time to answer our questions and explain customs of the wonderful local people. All details were well worked out and logistics went smoothly. Sam was kind and gentle but also made the call when needed to get a horse for me to finish the last leg of the journey”

“Sam is possibly the best trekking guide in Nepal if not the world. Guide, porter, medic, comidian, singer he does it all! Sam is very friendly and so easy to talk too. I found it very easy to bring up any issues I had (not that I had many) which helped to make the trekking experience the best it could possibly be. Sam is very knowledgeable about the mountains and the local culture and thought us so much. Sam also chooses the best local porters. Very friendly and very helpful. Couldn't have asked for any better. I couldn't recommend above and beyond trekking more highly”
