The Lower Dolpo Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and culturally fascinating treks, offering a truly off-the-beaten-path Himalayan adventure through the wild landscapes of western Nepal. Located in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri range, Lower Dolpo is home to ancient Tibetan Buddhist and Bon traditions, hidden valleys, high mountain passes, and stunning alpine terrain.
This unforgettable trek leads you deep into Shey Phoksundo National Park, where you'll encounter the turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake (3,600m), traverse two major high passes—Numa La (5,310m) and Baga La (5,170m)—and explore remote settlements like Dho Tarap and Ringmo. Along the way, you'll pass through dense pine forests, arid highlands, yak pastures, and dramatic river gorges. The journey begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, and then to Juphal, from where your trek begins. This region is rarely visited, making it ideal for experienced trekkers seeking solitude, raw nature, and cultural immersion far from commercial trekking routes.
The Lower Dolpo region lies in a restricted area, requiring special permits and the assistance of a licensed trekking agency. Due to limited infrastructure, most nights are spent in basic teahouses or tented camps, especially near high passes. However, this remoteness adds to the authenticity and adventure of the experience. Perfect for adventurous and physically fit trekkers, the Lower Dolpo Trek offers a unique combination of untouched Himalayan beauty, spiritual culture, and challenging high-altitude trekking. It is truly one of the most rewarding treks in Nepal for those willing to go beyond the typical trail.
The Lower Dolpo Trek stands out as a journey into one of the most remote and culturally preserved corners of the Himalayas, offering a "hidden land" experience that feels frozen in time. As you traverse the rugged trails of Shey Phoksundo National Park, your trek supports the resilient communities of the Dolpo-pa, whose ancient way of life remains largely untouched by the modern world. Reaching the shores of the legendary Phoksundo Lake—Nepal’s deepest and arguably most beautiful alpine lake—rewards you with a surreal sight: deep turquoise waters set against dramatic, barren cliffs and lush pine forests. This Lower Dolpo adventure is a true wilderness odyssey; you will cross challenging high passes like Numa La (5,238m) and Baga La (5,169m), witness the unique pre-Buddhist Bon Po culture, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of the elusive Snow Leopard or blue sheep.

“Our trek to Annapurna base camp was wonderful- the whole trip was organised with incredible care and attention by Sam in Kathmandu. He even took the time to meet up with us both before and after the trek to ensure that everything was in order and we were happy with arrangements. The guide we were given was superb and altered the trek schedule to reflect our pace of walking, while the porter was superb, friendly and caring. Having been trekking with far larger companies in the past, I have to say that the level of service from Above and Beyond surpassed their efforts, something we really appreciated since we were travelling alone and not part of a larger group. Highly recommend talking to Sam if you are thinking of a trip to Nepal.”

“Our Annapurna Base Camp Trek was amazing! The guide knows so many people and knows so much about the area that the experience was not just about one of the best treks in the world, but I felt totally immersed in the villages, the people and the region itself. Sam got us into every kitchen we stopped at so we could watch the cooks prepare the food and ask them any questions. I felt safe with his knowledge of the people Sam knows the area so well that he would spot animals in the jungle that I had missed even though I had been resting in the location without noticing them. Himalayan Lungurs on 3 occasions, ox, buffalo, it was amazing. Sam is so positive and joyful to be around. He is the best guide and he gets my highest endorsement and recommendation.”

“Above and Beyond Trekking fits its name very well. I felt completely taken care of during my trek. Sam, the owner of the company goes the extra mile to ensure that his clients are satisfied with their trek. I had been anxious about finding a good guide upon arriving in Nepal. Above and Beyond Trekking was recommended by a friend. I am happy to say that this is a fantastic company. All details were taken care of before I arrived. My guide was flexible and made adjustments to our itinerary as needed. The experience itself was wonderful. There is so much extraordinary beauty in Nepal. I would highly recommend Above and Beyond Trekking to anyone planning to trek in Nepal.”
