Everest Three Passes Trek Overview

The Everest Three Passes Trek is the ultimate Himalayan adventure, combining stunning landscapes, cultural immersion, and a challenging trail through the Everest region. This trek crosses three legendary high passes—Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,360m)—making it one of the most rewarding yet difficult treks in Nepal. Along the trail, trekkers enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and surrounding peaks.

With a typical duration of 18–21 days, the Everest Three Passes Trek itinerary is longer than the standard Everest Base Camp trek. The route includes acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, and Gokyo to adjust to the altitude. Proper acclimatization is crucial, as the trek reaches over 5,000 meters several times. The trek begins with a scenic flight to Lukla, the starting point of many Everest region treks, and then follows rugged trails through Sherpa villages, rhododendron forests, and alpine valleys.

Accommodation during this high-altitude journey is in traditional teahouses, which offer simple rooms and hearty meals. While facilities are basic, they provide warmth, Sherpa hospitality, and a chance for cultural exchange. The total cost of the package varies based on the duration and services included, such as experienced local guides, porters, meals, and permits.

Highlights of the trek include visiting Everest Base Camp, exploring the pristine Gokyo Lakes, climbing Gokyo Ri for panoramic views, crossing dramatic glaciers, and experiencing the lesser-visited valleys of the Khumbu. The route map covers a complete circuit of the Everest region, ensuring a more comprehensive experience compared to other trekking itineraries. Each section of the journey presents unique challenges and rewards, making it ideal for those who want to go beyond the usual trekking trails.

The difficulty of this circuit is considered strenuous due to its length, altitude, and the technical nature of the passes. However, with proper preparation and guidance, it is achievable for seasoned trekkers and adventurous beginners alike. A flexible itinerary with enough rest days ensures safety and comfort while tackling the demanding terrain.

This trip is more than a trail—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that blends adventure, culture, and stunning Himalayan scenery. Whether you are drawn to the challenge of crossing three passes, the spiritual energy of ancient monasteries, or the rewards of visiting Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp, this trek offers everything a high-altitude adventure should.

What Our Clients Say About the Everest Three Passes Trek

“Stop looking elsewhere. We had the absolute best time with Sam hiking the three passes and Island Peak route in the Everest region in November 2024. I knew from the moment Sam met us at the airport at 1am with marigold flower necklaces, a bright smile and loads of enthusiasm we were going to have a good time. He was endlessly patient, kind and enthusiastic. Over the next three weeks there were innumerable moments where we said to each other as a group 'I am so thankful we have Sam. He's the best guide.' He's always attentive, nothing is ever too much and all the other guides come to him for advise, translations or help. The Three Passes hike and Island Peak was absolutely stunning and I would do it again in a heart beat. I wouldn't hike in Nepal with any other group besides Sam.”

“We had an incredible experience with Above and Beyond Trekking while doing the Three Passes Trek in the Everest region. From the moment we got in touch to book the trek, Sam was professional and responsive. Sam went the extra mile throughout, managing all the logistics so we could enjoy our holiday. Sam is local, and has a lifetime of guiding groups of all experience and fitness levels. He’s friendly, knowledgeable about the local culture, and his outgoing personality meant we had personal experiences with locals we might not have otherwise. He is exceptionally considerate – we had no idea how much we would crave fresh fruit once we were up high, but Sam had planned ahead packing in pomegranate we would all enjoy each evening after dinner. Trekking in the Everest region can be incredibly quiet and peaceful, but often there are a lot of tourists. Sam was like-minded with us, in taking the less travelled options so we could enjoy the experience of being in such an incredible part of the world. One of our highlights was ascending Island Peak, the photos are below – they are able to cater for all levels of trekking adventure. I couldn't recommend Above and Beyond more highly”

“We booked the 18 day Everest three passes trek with Above and Beyond. This excellent trek covers four valleys in the Khumbu Everest region, with three challenging climbs through the passes in between, and an excursion to Everest Base camp. For those with the time it well worth covering the extra distance and height, as you become well acclimatised to the altitude, the views are incredibly rewarding and far better than what you'd experience on the simple base camp trek, and you experience a wider range of Himalayan environments that are all simply stunning. Sam from Above and Beyond was our guide and organiser. He was knowledgeable, experienced, conscientious, generous, and funny. Sam always put his clients first. He was fit, and well versed in mountain safety. Sam organised our porter, from a local village, who was top class. In this way, Above and Beyond supports the local tourism industry in a sustainable way. He encouraged us to take an extra day unscheduled acclimatisation for the safety of the climbers. He organised connecting flights to Lukla and made sure everything ran smoothly. He takes his role as your host and guide in Nepal very seriously and has the highest standards of hospitality. 10/10 would recommend.”

“I would without reservation recommend Sam to organise and guide any trek in Nepal at a reasonable price. My two friends wanted a physically challenging trek that would enable us to a lot of country in the Everest area. This is my 5th or so trip with Sam and, as usual, the booking of airline tickets, paying Tims, hotel accommodation and all the other costs were done efficiently without fuss. I love the way Sam is so relational and friendly with all the hotel owners and the porters he hires for us. His knowledge of the trek and all the alternatives was amazing. Sam speaks fluent English and his love of the mountains and taking people into them is infectious.”

“We set out to trek the Three Passes together with Sam in October 2018. It was an amazing trek and Sam is a great guide - trustworthy, flexible, helpful and knowledgeable. We had to change the route a bit as we went, and Sam knew exactly what to do and where to go. I would recommend him to anyone wanting to do a trek in Nepal.”

“What a trip this was - spent 18 amazing days trekking in the Khumbu Region. More specifically we flew into Lukla and began our hike from here. During our 18 days we trekked over 3 fantastic passes, visited Everest Base Camp, saw some of the worlds highest mountains (Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyo) and got to know amazing people. All of this was made possible by one fantastic guy, Sam. From the first e-mail response to my trip query, meeting us with a huge smile at the airport when we arrived after a long and tiresome flight from Norway to ensuring that we found a way to get to Lukla despite our flights beeing cancelled due to bad weather two days in a row....Sam always made sure that things got sorted out. Sams guides and porters who spent time with us up in the mountain made sure that everything was well organised, carried our stuff and always made sure we felt safe at all times. We really felt that they genuinly cared for our well being and making sure we the clients were happy. Both Sam and his crew really went above and beyond to make sure that this was indeed a trip of a lifetime! I highly recommend this company if you are planning a trekking trip to Nepal. We definitely want to visit Nepal again and we will definitely use Above and Beyond when we do. ”
